Krishna Janmashtami, Mantras and Significance of Naam Japa

Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the divine appearance of Lord Shri Krishna, born to Devaki and Vasudeva in Mathura. It is observed on Krishna Paksha Ashtami, the eighth lunar day of the dark fortnight, traditionally in the month of Bhadrapada according to the North Indian calendar. Because Krishna’s birth is associated with the night, the main worship takes place around Nishita Kaal, or midnight. Devotees fast, sing Krishna bhajans, read about His birth and wait until midnight to celebrate the appearance of Bal Krishna.

    Krishna Janmashtami 2026 Date

In India, Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on Friday, 4 September 2026. The date is also listed as Janmashtami in the Government of India holiday calendar and the 2026 Vaishnava calendar of ISKCON Bangalore.

For New Delhi, the Panchang timings are:

Ashtami Tithi Begins: 4 September 2026 at 2:25 AM
Ashtami Tithi Ends: 5 September 2026 at 12:13 AM
Rohini Nakshatra Begins: 4 September 2026 at 12:29 AM
Rohini Nakshatra Ends: 4 September 2026 at 11:04 PM

The Nishita worship period falls around midnight. Exact puja timings vary slightly according to location.

Mantras to Chant on Krishna Janmashtami

One of the most appropriate chants for Janmashtami is the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra:

    Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
    Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
    Hare Rama Hare Rama
    Rama Rama Hare Hare

This mantra is centred on the divine names of Krishna, Rama and Hare and is especially important in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition. ISKCON specifically includes the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra among prayers recommended for Sri Krishna Janmashtami.

    Another powerful Krishna mantra is:

    “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya”

It means an offering of reverence to Bhagavan Vasudeva and appears repeatedly in the Srimad Bhagavatam. The mantra is particularly meaningful on Janmashtami because Krishna appears as Vasudeva—the divine son of Vasudeva.

For a simple count-based Naam Japa Sankalpa, devotees may also lovingly repeat “Shri Krishna,” “Krishna” or “Govinda” as their chosen Divine Name.

Benefits of Doing Naam Japa on Krishna Janmashtami

The deeper significance of Naam Japa on Janmashtami can be understood through the story of Krishna's birth.

Kamsa had imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva after hearing that Devaki's eighth son would bring about his downfall. Their children were taken from them, and the family lived under constant fear. But when Shri Krishna finally appeared, the Srimad Bhagavatam describes an important transformation: Vasudeva recognised the divine child and became fearless. Both Vasudeva and Devaki then turned toward Krishna in prayer.

This makes Naam Japa especially meaningful on Janmashtami. The very night being celebrated is a story of fear being replaced by remembrance of Krishna, darkness giving way to divine presence, and helplessness turning into surrender.

The Bhagavad Gita gives this connection even greater significance. Shri Krishna says:

    “Janma karma cha me divyam…”

He teaches that one who truly understands the divine nature of His birth and activities ultimately attains Him. Janmashtami is specifically the celebration of that divine birth, while Naam Japa keeps the mind continuously centred on the One whose appearance is being celebrated.

Krishna also describes His devoted souls as those who are constantly chanting His glories and worshipping Him with devotion.

    Therefore, on Krishna Janmashtami:

Remember Krishna's Birth → Understand His Divine Appearance
Chant Krishna's Name → Keep the Mind Fixed on Him
Offer the Japa → Turn Celebration into Personal Bhakti

A 21 Lakh Naam Japa Maha Sankalpa on Krishna Janmashtami is therefore more than achieving a collective number. It becomes a shared offering of remembrance—millions of Divine Names offered together in devotion at the lotus feet of Shri Krishna on the sacred day of His appearance.
